The
Industrial Design Engineer draws upon a deep understanding of human behavior, brands, trends and perceptions to tell stories that resonate in the minds of the consumer and the client. This position collaborates with multidisciplinary teams and learns from insights on a variety of programs at various project phases, from immersion and concepting, to detailed design. This position is proactive and adept at project management and is able to provide design services
for products throughout the full lifecycle of the design from conceptualization through product launch. Additionally, responsibilities include creation of documentation necessary to convey the design solution to management or other business functions through visual renderings, animations, physical models, mechanical drawings, and written reports.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Acts as a content creator responsible for all design deliverables on assigned projects, balancing industrial design expertise with cross disciplinary collaboration.
• Designs, develops and creates products based on ideas and concepts through design research, design strategy, graphic illustration representations / presentations, 3D modeling and photorealistic rendering, CAD drawings, sourcing materials and pricing.
• Contributes to the design and visualization of concepts in cooperation with other business functions involved in the new product development process.
• Acts as a key driver of the innovation of new products, including materials selection, construction, mechanisms, form factor development, color, surface finish, manufacturing processes and packaging.
• Collaborates with the design team to define and refine scope, brief, and approach to the new projects and to improve existing products & streamline manufacturing.
• Engages in ongoing and day-to-day involvement with Fi teams and client’s engineering, R&D, operations, and manufacturing teams.
• Supports the transition from design to engineering by partnering closely with Engineers and Project Managers to create proof of concept mock-ups or prototypes using various manufacturing processes, 3D printing, etc.
• Ensures product development goals are being met for each project.
• Prepares documentation including product layout and production, visual research, preparation for presentations, as well as conceptual sketching, ideation, and CAD modeling.
• Provides project and client support while managing work time effectively.
• Other duties as assigned.
SKILLS, EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
The Industrial Designer is an exceptional learner, with a growth mind-set who wants to influence their own development, has an insatiable curiosity and the ability to function autonomously within a multi-disciplinary team. Additionally, the Industrial Designer is comfortable working in ambiguous, non-rules-based environments and possesses the following:
• Bachelor’s degree in Product / Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineer, or similar.
• The ability to execute design with a strong product development focus and experience working within a consulting agency or similar working environment leading clients and teams through the design process required, generally acquired with 2 – 5 years professional experience.
• Advanced ideation skills and a solution-based user experience perspective.
• Proficiency in the tools required to perform strong visualization sketching skills, from quick concept sketching to complete presentation sketches, using 3D CAD modeling and rendering software (Solidworks, CREO, Fusion 360 and/or Keyshot) and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, LightRoom and others).
• Knowledge of materials and the current technical trends of how they are used in glass, electronics, plastics, metal and integrated manufacturing assembly processes.
• Ability to develop relationships at all levels of an organization and across functions with a collaborative work style but with a focus for action.
• Very strong oral presentation and visual communication skills.
• An enthusiastic team player with a high-level of energy.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously, managing details for precision and accuracy in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
• Ability to use computer keyboard and sit in a stationary position for extended periods.
• Work is performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
• 10% – 15% travel may be required. Travel may include overnight trips covering areas both in and out of state.
• Extended work hours (12+ hrs/day) required on occasion due to the necessity to meet client needs which can involve attendance at meetings and working with others to finalize projects and meet multiple deadlines requiring attendance that begins well before the normally scheduled workday and may extend well into the evening. This position is a safety sensitive position and is subject to company drug and alcohol screening including pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident.
