Interim Controller (Fully Remote – East Coast Hours)

A fast-growing, national e-commerce organization is seeking an experienced Interim Controller to support their Accounting team through a high-volume, manual year-end close. This is a hands-on role, no direct staff supervision, focused on stabilizing processes, supporting Senior Accountants, and leading key accounting workflows in a complex, SKU-heavy environment.
This opportunity is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-moving, non-automated close cycle and has a proven track record of parachuting into mid-sized companies to bring structure, clarity, and execution.
Responsibilities
- Own and execute month-end close within a manual, Excel-driven environment
- Perform and review balance sheet reconciliations, including high-volume inventory recs
- Support the accounting team by troubleshooting issues and organizing workflow
- Partner cross-functionally with operations, sales, and leadership
- Serve as primary accounting contact for external auditors
- Summarize and analyze large-scale SKU data
- Improve pace and efficiency of month end close
- Communicate findings, risks, and progress clearly and proactively to stakeholders
Must-Have Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- Active CPA
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience
- 2+ years in an accounting leadership role (Sr. Manager, Director, Controller)
- Experience supporting a $100M+ revenue organization
- Background working with $20M+ in inventory
- Demonstrated success managing manual close processes in Excel
- Ability to clearly communicate accounting concepts to non-accounting partners
- High comfort level working with large SKU volumes and complex data sets
- Strong Excel skills: VLOOKUPs, pivot tables, troubleshooting broken formulas, data summarization
Experience with $50M+ in inventory
- Prior work with Big 4 auditors
- Experience summarizing and analyzing SKUs
- Experience stepping into a manual, high-volume close environment and stabilizing quickly
