Investment Team Associate: Public Markets

We are working on an opportunity with a principal investment firm based in Memphis, TN, founded to deliver superior returns by partnering with entrepreneurial founders and management teams who are devoted to creating enduring businesses. Our investment approach is focused on identifying businesses with long growth runways and sustainable competitive positions. The firm manages funds investing in long-term, concentrated portfolios of both publicly-traded and private businesses.
The firm is seeking to add an equity research Associate to its public markets investment team for its hedge fund.

The firm invests in the securities of listed companies on a global basis and seeks to identify asymmetric opportunities to invest alongside founders and owner-operators of publicly-traded businesses with a maniacal focus on building enduring value. We are long-term, strategic shareholders that hunt for opportunities in the global universe of 1) closely held (>15% individual/corporate ownership) and 2) less than $20bn market cap, that meet our target business attributes, target niches & themes, and target special situations characteristics. The portfolio is concentrated with a typical portfolio of 10-15 positions including strategic investments in private/less-liquid securities.

Job Description

We are seeking to hire an exceptional equity research Associate who will provide critical inputs to the investment process which includes assessing a business’s competitive strengths and weaknesses, projecting its growth potential, and discerning its underlying economics and earnings power. Interact with and work alongside senior investment team members daily including the founder/managing partner to develop deep and differentiated insights about existing and potential portfolio companies.
The Associate will demonstrate outstanding character and is experience in working with small teams. Core responsibilities will include analyzing the financial results and operating developments of holdings and target companies, financial statement analysis and modeling, data analysis, and in-depth research on businesses, industries, and management teams.

The chief qualifications for the role are demonstrable interest in public markets investment analysis, a thirst for learning, intellectual humility, and a commitment to a continuous pursuit of excellence. Candidates should be capable of working both collaboratively and independently while balancing time-sensitive work with long-term research projects.

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

• At least 1-2 years of relevant work experience which can include, but is not limited to, investment banking, strategy consulting, equity research, corporate finance, business analysis and valuation, etc.
• Undergraduate degree which demonstrates intellectual curiosity and academic excellence in any field of study
• Understanding of accounting, corporate finance, economics, and business strategy
• Proficiency with MS Office suite, especially Excel (financial modeling) and PowerPoint
• Experience with statistics, data analysis, and programming languages would be additive
• Exceptional analytical, oral, written, and presentation skills
